Lots of Returns Piling Up

After Saturday's blizzard and a couple of days of travel, I have quite a few returns to catch up on.  My favorite return in quite a while came from Brant Alyea, but I'll post that one tomorrow.

Woodie Fryman signed four cards for me:  1971, 1972, 1973 and 1978 Topps.

Ken Berry and Tom Shopay each signed their 1972 Topps.

Bill Gogolewski signed his 1972 and 1973 Topps.

Jim Colborn signed his 1971, 1972, 1973 and 1978 Topps.

Jack Heidemann signed his 1971 and 1972 Topps and also included a signed business card.

Finally, Ken Sanders signed his 1972 Topps.

I'm exhausted after trying for two days to travel to New York state and ending up getting stranded in Atlanta last night.  I got about four hours of sleep before giving up and traveling back home.

July 25th, 1964 - White Sox 6, Twins 5 in 13 innings

The second vintage program I bought on Ebay was for a game at Comiskey Park in Chicago on July 25th, 1964.  Again, the Twins lost, but this was a more exciting game than the Yankees program I wrote about yesterday.

This game went to 13 innings.  Since the program was scored by its purchaser, I was able to track down which game this was.  According to retrosheet.org, Killebrew went 2-5 with an RBI, a walk, and a strikeout.  He also committed an error in left field.  Versalles hit his 11th home run of the year off Hoyt Wilhelm in the 12th inning.  Oliva was caught stealing.  The Twins used nine pitchers!

For the White Sox, Ron Hansen hit his 10th home run of the year off of Jim Perry in the 9th inning.  The White Sox used five pitchers.

This program is in much better shape than the Yankees program.  The binding is still tight, there is only one very small crease on the front cover, and the color has not faded much.  It was a couple of dollars more than the Yankees program too, but at just $7.95, I think it was a good pick up.

I was right, no mail yesterday due to the snowstorm/blizzard.  I'm supposed to be on a plane right now headed to New York, but my flight was canceled and rescheduled until tomorrow.  Too bad I had to drive to the airport and go through security before it was canceled.

August 7th, 1962 - Yankees 14, Twins 1

I recently bought a few old Twins baseball programs on Ebay.  They are all away games for the Twins.

The first one is from Yankee Stadium in 1962.  The original purchaser kept score in it so I was able to figure out which game it was for based on the box scores over at retrosheet.org.

Unfortunately, the Yankees routed the Twins, 14 to 1.  Killebrew went 0-4, but Versalles went 3-3 for the Twins.  Tom Tresh went 3-5 for the Yankees, with 2  home runs and three RBI.  Maris and Mantle played.  They didn't get any hits, but had three walks between them.  Maris scored twice and Mantle scored once.  Camilo Pascual gave up 6 runs in just 2 innings.  Ouch.  Ralph Terry picked up his 16th win for the Yankees.

This program is pretty beat up and has some water stains.  But for only $5.95, it's fun to look through.

A Slow Week

I came home from my business trip this week to only two returns.

Tom House signed his 1972 and 1978 Topps.

Jack Harshman signed his 1956 Topps nicely in blue sharpie. 

Even though I've been concentrating on the 1972 Topps set lately, I still really like the older cards.  I might try to take some to send out a few more.  It's been a rough year in terms of losing some great old baseball players.  Gil McDougald, Sparky Anderson and recently Ron Santo just to name a few.

My son received another Ron Lewis postcard.  This time signed by Joe Pignatano.  That brings his total to 15.

Huge Day At The Mailbox

I came home today to find eight returns in my mailbox!  One of the returns was a failure.  I received a 1955 Red Man card back from Don Mueller unsigned with no explanation.  Maybe I had the wrong address, but usually that would result in a RTS (Return to Sender) instead of being sent back in my sase.  I'll keep my eye on SCN to see if others get some returns.

My returns included seven 1972 Topps for my set.

Don Pavletich signed his 1971 and 1972 Topps.

Claude Osteen signed his 1972 Topps and 1972 Topps In Action.

Ken Rudolph signed his 1972 and 1973 Topps.

Bobby Floyd and Ron Cook each signed a 1972 Topps.

Darrell Brandon signed a 1972 and 1973 Topps.

Finally, Tom Brewer signed a 1955 Topps.

I mailed out 17 more requests today so I should continue to get a steady flow of returns this month.

I ordered about 85 cards today from SportLots.com in preparation for TwinsFest.  I may need to order a few 8x10s, but other than that I think I'm pretty well stocked.

TTM Returns and Card Show Finds

The snow didn't keep us from making it to the card show in Bloomington today.  We attended the auction and bought a few things.  I bought a signed Matt Lawton bobblehead for only $11.  My younger son bought a Johan Santana placque that included an 8x10 and two baseball cards (not signed).  I also bought four 9-card pages filled with 1971 Topps including Willie McCovey, Billy Williams and Joe Morgan.  At $3 it was a bargain.  At the tables, my older son bought 22 1958 Topps cards to send out for autographs.  They were only $1 each.

I received more 1972 Topps returns today.  Phil Niekro signed his and added his HOF inscription for his $10 fee.

Monty Montgomery signed his rookie card.

Gerry Moses signed his 1971, 1972 and 1973 Topps.

 

And Dave LaRoche signed his 1972 and 1978 Topps.

I had one failure today.  I received my 1955 Topps back unsigned form Mel Roach with no explanation.  Hopefully he is doing okay.

Several Returns Today

I received a few more '72 Topps back today.  Bob Grich signed his for me.

Bill Parsons signed a 1972 and 1973 Topps.

And Steve Blass signed his.

My son got back a 1958 Topps signed by Frank Thomas.  Mr. Thomas also signed an extra card for my son as well as wrote him a nice letter letting him know where the $5 donation my son included would be used.

We're hoping to make it to a card show tomorrow, but the 5-8 inches of snow we're getting might interfere with our plans.

Today I received one return in the mail today.  Jim Mason signed his 1972, 1973 and 1978 Topps.

My son received two multi-signed cards back today.  Dick Stigman completed his 1962 Topps Tribe Hill Trio, already signed by Barry Latman and Jim Perry.

Billy Pierce completed his 1958 Topps Mound Aces card, already signed by Bob Friend.
