Another return trickled in today. Claude Osteen is a super generous signer with a 97% success rate on SCN. He has always done a great job for me, and has always used a blue marker. Although, today's return does have a bit of a smear on the 72 Topps In Action card. If there was a Hall of Fame for ttm signers, he'd be right up there with Bobby Shantz and Bill Mazeroski.
He signed both his 72 Topps for me as well as a couple Senators team cards from 1962 and 1963.
The 62 was already signed by Joe McClain and Bennie Daniels.
The 63 was also signed by McClain and Daniels, as well as Carl Bouldin and Ken Hamlin.
I received two more boxes of Staedtler blue medium pens today that I ordered from Amazon. They are great for cards, but sometimes a bit fat. So, if I'm sending a bunch of team cards, I'll send along a fine point instead of medium. Anyway, the point of bringing this up was the cost. Even on Amazon, they were $2.00 each when buying a box of 10. It doesn't sound like much, but I always tell the player to keep the pens, which they almost always do, so it adds up after a while.
I ask them to keep the pens partly as a gift and so they hopefully keep using them for requests they get after mine. But, I also want to reduce the risk of the pen breaking during shipping and leaking ink all over the items they just signed for me and generally making a huge mess. I don't know if this is a valid concern though. I've never heard of it happening. My wife says I always think about the worst case scenario happening and this is probably another instance of that.
Does anyone have a story of a broken/leaking pen in the mail to help me justify my fear?
