Paul Splittorff Return

Finally, a return today.  But just one.  Paul Splittorff signed four cards for me:  1971, 1972, 1973 and 1978 Topps.

I sent out a handful this week and hope to get a couple more out.  Last night I ordered about 25 cards from the 1972 Topps set from SportLots.com.  That should help get some momentum going again.

A Few Paid Signing Returns

My ttm drought continues, but I did receive a few cards today that I sent in to some Attomic Sports signings.

I had two cards signed by Red Schoendienst:  a 1949 Bowman and 1972 Topps.

This makes 40 signed cards from the 1949 Bowman set.  It's one of my favorites.  An odd size, but I like the vintage look of the photos and plain backgrounds that are great for autographs.

I also had two more 1972 Topps signed.  This time by Jim Palmer and Hal McRae.  I had previously purchased a PSA/DNA authenticated 1972 Palmer card, but I decided to have one signed anyway.

I think this makes my 1972 Topps set total 190 cards now.

VERY slow lately

For about a week now I've been disappointed at the mailbox every day.  I have at least a dozen requests out and haven't gotten any back for a while.

I sent out five more today and tomorrow I am sending out a 1957 Sport Magazine to Billy Pierce.

I hope to have more to post about later this week!

A Couple TwinsFest Stragglers

I came across a couple of baseballs that I got signed at TwinsFest that I forgot to post about.

I had Joe Nathan sign a 2008 All Star ball on the last day of TwinsFest.  I have Joe on a regular ball, as well as All Star balls from 2005, 2008 and 2009.

I also had Jason Repko sign a ball for me.  I didn't get very many balls signed, and I'm not sure why I had Repko sign a ball.  I think he's a good player, and I don't think I really had anything else for him to sign.

It's been a pretty slow week for ttm returns.  I expected more considering how many I have out.  Tomorrow night I'll try to send out at least five more letters.

Yastrzemski and Orlando Hudson

Two great returns today!  First, I received the 1972 Topps signed by Carl Yastrzemski that I sent it to Bud's Sports Cards last month.  This is the third card I've sent in to Bud's to get signed by Yaz, and it's been handled perfectly each time.  Yaz isn't cheap, and I paid $10 more for this card than I did last time two years ago.  There is also an "In Action" card from the 1972 Topps for Yaz, but I didn't want to spend that much so I'll wait and do that some other time.

I also had a nice surprise today.  I had noticed on SCN that Orlando Hudson had been signing from the Padre's spring training address, so I sent three 2010 Allen & Ginters for me and my sons.  I explained in my letter that we didn't have a chance to see him at TwinsFest and we'd appreciate it if he'd sign these for us.  I doubt they even read the letters, but the cards came back signed.  I'm really happy to add this card to my 2010 set, which I started at TwinsFest and posted about here.

That makes six I have signed from this set, including Hudson, Kubel, Young, Cuddyer, Span and Baker.  There are six I"m missing.  I'm still hopeful I'll get Nathan, Pavano and Liriano, but I don't have high hopes of getting Thome, Mauer or Morneau.

I'm watching the Twins and Pirates spring training game on tv tonight.  It definitely makes it feel like spring!

Jarvis, Suarez and McMullen

I'm catching up on my returns from Friday and Saturday.  I still have a lot that I sent out in February that I haven't gotten back yet.  I thought I'd have gotten more of them back by now.

On Friday, I received a 1972 and 1973 Topps signed by Pat Jarvis.

Yesterday I got two returns.  Ken Suarez signed a 1971 and 1972 Topps for me.

And Ken McMullen signed and personalized his 1971, 1972 and 1973 Topps.

I now have 188 signatures on the 1972 Topps set, approaching the half-way point of my 400 goal.  I'm starting to think that the goal is more ambitious than I originally thought.  I thought the first 300 would be easy ttm, but I'm finding that the high number series is going to be expensive, and the players aren't as willing to sign through the mail as the players I collect from the '50's and '60's.

I only sent out one last week so I'm hoping to get at least 5 out the rest of this week.

Another Terrible Tuesday

I have a lot of requests out but didn't get a single return today.  I did get three returns yesterday that I didn't have time to post about.

Larry Brown signed his 1972 Topps which I sent out last November.

Jose Cardenal signed his traded card.  This is one of the high number cards I bought at the last TCSCC show.

Dick Green also signed his high number card from the 1972 set, as well as cards from 1971 and 1973.

Larry Stahl, Mike Hegan and Joe Jay Returns

I received two returns today and my son received one.

Larry Stahl signed a 1972 Topps.

Mike Hegan signed his 1971, 1972 and 1973 Topps.

And my son added Joe Jay to his 1958 Topps collection.

Mike Ryan Return

It's been pretty slow lately, despite the fact that I have quite a few requests out in the mail.  Thursdays are usually good days, but today I just got one return back.

Mike Ryan signed his 1972 Topps for me.  I included $5 with my request.

Stan Musial Magazine and TTM Returns

I've been waiting anxiously for the 1950 Sport Life I sent in to a Stan Musial signing to be sent back.  It arrived today and looks great.  I sent this in to an AtommicSports signing (Tom Orr) and as always, it was handled well.

I also received a couple of returns today.  Tim Cullen signed his 1972 Topps.

Also, Mike Nagy signed and returned his 1971 and 1972 Topps for me.

Card Show Auction Purchases

My sons and I had a good time at the Twin Cities Sports Collectors Club show and auction today in Bloomington.  I bought nine more high-number cards from the 1972 Topps set to send out for autographs and my older son bought about ten 1958 Topps to send out.

We also attended the auction at the show today.  It turned out to be a good one for me.  The main item I was interested was a game-used, signed bat by Cristian Guzman.  It had a minimum bid of $40 and I thought it would go well above that.  But, it didn't.  I won it for $40, there were no other bidders. (Again, the blog wants to rotate the image and I can't change it)

I also bought a baseball signed by Ralph Branca.  It's not authenticated, but it looks pretty good to me.  It was only $19.

Finally, I bought a set of five signed Hall of Fame postcards including Robin Roberts, Enos Slaughter, Fergie Jenkins, Bobby Doerr and Ralph Kiner.  The Roberts signature is a little smeared.  All of these players are/were good signers through the mail and the signatures look similar to ttm examples I've gotten myself so I'm pretty confident they are legitimate.  The set of cards was $22.

My younger son didn't get anything at the show but enjoyed watching the auction.

Lindy McDaniel Return

One return in the mailbox today.  Lindy McDaniel signed a 1972 Topps for me.  I had included $5 with my request.

Tomorrow the boys and I will be going to a card show.  I hope to buy a few more '72 Topps to send out.
