Johnny's Autographs From Saturday

Saturday was the first day we got wristbands to try to get Mauer and Morneau. Johnny got both of them. He was nice enough to get Mauer on a bat for me since he already has Mauer on lots of items.

While he was waiting in Mauer's line, I got him a few autographs down at corner #1. Dave Goltz, Juan Berenguer and Tim Laudner all signed cards. I gave Johnny a 1987 Topps Leaders card already signed by Frank Viola to have Laudner sign.

After Johnny got Mauer, we got in line for Morneau in case we had the lucky wristbands. Johnny did! He stayed in line to get his bat signed. (Another instance of Blogger rotating my image when I don't want them to). Johnny has wanted to get Morneau to sign a bat for a long time, and went to great lengths two years ago to try to get it, as I posted about here.

After he got Morneau's autograph, he came down to the Dome floor and we got in a very long line for Valencia and Perkins. We got through the line without any problem. As I posted that morning, Valencia and Perkins were talking to each other and didn't even make eye contact with fans who were going through their lines.

John had them both sign cards for him.

Next we got in a line for Carl Pavano and Jason Marquis. Johnny had them each sign a card.

Next, we took a break and sat in the stands and had a bite to eat. We noticed Jim "Mudcat" Grant signing at the Fergie Jenkins booth so John headed down there and had him sign a 1965 Topps.

We were debating whether or not to go get Denard Span's autograph but finally decided to, even though he was all by himself and they were charging $15. John had him sign a 2011 Topps Heritage.

Finally, we went through a line with Josh Willingham and Ryan Doumit. John had them each sign cards.

It was a long day and we weren't feeling good as we each had a head cold we were fighting. We had fun, but were ready to head home and get some sleep.

My Older Son's TwinsFest Autographs

I've spent most of the evening scanning in all my TwinsFest items, but I haven't updated my web site yet. That will take a few more evenings to complete, then I'll post them here.

Tonight I'll start posting my older son's items. He spent Friday night going through lines with my wife while I was with my younger son. He and my wife were interviewed by the local Fox News crew and appeared on the news briefly that night, with my wife describing how we organize for the event and where we display everything. My wife doesn't collect autographs, so I prepare a binder for her to get me some autographs as she takes my son around.

Anyway, the first station was Nick Blackburn, Scott Baker, Alexi Casilla and Matt Capps. My son had them all sign cards except Casilla, who he had sign a game-used bat that he had previously purchased at the Twins Pro Shop.

Next, they went to a line with Drew Butera and Denard Span. Alex Burnett was supposed to be there but didn't make it for some reason.

Next up was Shannon Stewart, Jacque Jones, Jerry White and Joe Vavra. We never have anything for Vavra to sign, we'll have to look harder next year. Johnny had him sign a Target Field photo.

They were also able to get through another line during the third session: Brian Duensing, Ryan Doumit, Trevor Plouffe and Rene Tosoni. During the last game of the 2011 season, we had seats right in back of the Twins dugout. In the middle of the first inning, Plouffe tossed Johnny a ball that he caught as the last out as he headed back to the dug out. Johnny had him sign that ball for him.

Finally, the were the VERY last people to get through the last line with Dan Gladden, Kent Hrbek and Brad Radke. The people actually tried to cut off the line right in front of them, but somehow they managed to talk them in to letting them through. Johnny had Hrbek sign a 1987 World Series program already signed by Roy Smalley, Tom Kelly, Gene Larkin and Gladden.

It was a pretty busy night! Tomorrow I'll post at least some of his autographs from Saturday.

My Younger Son's TwinsFest Autographs

I spent most of the day today scanning in both my son's items from TwinsFest. I got all of their items done, and barely started on mine.

My younger son only went Friday night. He doesn't care for the crowds, and he's a bit more practical than me and my older son in that he knows he doesn't have any more room to store his collection.

I spent Friday night with him while my wife went with my older son.

First, we went to a line with Joe Benson, Ben Revere and Kyle Waldrop. Scott Diamond was supposed to be there but didn't show up until later in the evening. My son had Benson sign a card, Revere sign a picture, and Waldrop sign a card.

We didn't go to a line in the second session, but in the third session we made it through two line. In the first, we saw Shannon Stewart, Jacque Jones, Jerry White and Joe Vavra.

The second line we went through was Brian Duensing, Ryan Doumit, Trevor Plouffe and Rene Tosoni (who signed the Target Field picture that Vavra signed above).

In the last session, we saw newcomers Josh Willingham and Jason Marquis.

After this last line, I went back down to the Dome floor to hit another line while David went through the Willingham and Marquis line with his older brother, who had been waiting in other line but had my wife keep his spot while he went through this line quickly.

Not too bad for just one evening. We could have done more, but this was all he was interested in. We had time to look around the card show for a while as well. He was disappointed there were no spinning wheels or dice games. They must have banned those this year. He didn't find anything he wanted to buy at the show.

Tomorrow I'll start posting my older son's items. He had quite a bit more as he was there all three days. Hopefully I can get more of my items scanned in as well.

Whew - We're Done

We're home now. After we got Denard Span to sign our bats, we went down to the Dome floor and Johnny got Frank Quilici to sign a picture, as well as Swarzak on a picture, Jeff Gray and someone else I can't remember right now (I'm very tired).

Then we headed back upstairs and got in line for Morris, Tapani and Tom Kelly. It was close, but we got through that line at the very end. Tom Kelly insisted that silver pen on the bobblehead's blue cap wouldn't work, so I said to sign it however he thought it would look best. He picked up a black pen and I assumed he was going to sign the base or the jersey, but then signed the brim of the blue cap in black sharpie. You can hardly see it. Oh well.

As usual, when we got home we put all of our autographs from the weekend on the dining room table. We couldn't get a consistent count, but we got somewhere between 115 and 120 autographs, including 7 bats (4 were game used) and 9 bobbleheads.

I'll spend most of the day tomorrow photographing and scanning all these items to post to our personal web sites, then I'll post about all the items over the next several days (or weeks).

I ran into a few acquaintances that I've met via my blog or Sportscollectors.net including Zane, Randy and Joel. Good to see you guys!

It's not even 7:00, but I'm exhausted and heading to bed.

No Mauer For Us Today

We didn't get picked for Mauer's line today. We went back down to the card show and I found a handful of cards to send out ttm.

Then we wandered into the Twin's Pro Shop area and found some reasonably priced game used Denard Span bats. We each bought one and even though he doesn't sign until the last session, we're going to go there now and try to be first in line so we can get through at least two.

Pavano and Marquis

The Pavano and Jason Marquis line was empty when we checked it out so we went through it very quickly. Then, I went through again because I had another card I wanted Pavano on.

We've been walking around looking at the card show again and are taking another break in the stands.

We didn't get to the Carew line, it was extremely long with just a half hour left. I don't know why people bother to stand in a line they have absolutely no chance of getting through.

My son found a Valencia signed picture he like so he's off to go buy it.

The next autograph session is a little weak. Denard Span is signing, but he's $15 so I think we'll pass.

In the last session, we will probably get Willingham and Doumit again, then head home for some much needed supper and sleep. The food here is awful.

My son got Mauer on a bat for me and I got through the Carroll, Manship, Parmalee, Hendrik line. We walked around a bit and looked at the card show but it' getting crowded.

I went over to the Fergie Jenkins Foundation booth and got J.R. Richard to finish off his 3-player rookie card from 1972 and Fergie on his 72 Topps as well.

Now I'm in a HUGE line for Valencia and Perkins. Now that the wristbands are in use, the non-Mauer and Morneau lines are huge!

Wrapping Up the First Night of TwinsFest

We got through the Willingham and Marquis line so quickly that I had time to run back down the Dome floor to get Scott Diamond, Gene Larkin (on a '91 bobblehead) Scott Erickson on a Metrodome ball, and Rick Stelmaszek on a card.

My wife and older son are still in line for Hrbek, Gladden and Radke. They may not make it through.

Overall a really good night. Now off to home to get some sleep.

Last Minute TwinsFest Preparations

We've spent a few minutes this morning double-checking our binders full of cards and pictures to make sure we've got everything we need for tonight. Our backpacks are packed and we're ready to go.

We plan to arrive right about the time the doors open since we don't want to have to wait outside. Our plans for tonight aren't too ambitious so I don't expect any disappointments. There really aren't any "must-haves" this year so we aren't stressing too much about whether we can get through certain lines or not.

I'll make a few posts throughout the evening to update our progress and luck.

1958 Topps - Alex Kellner

I added another 1958 Topps to my set collection. I purchased an Alex Kellner card from Mickey's. It was a decent price, not much more than the price of getting it authenticated. It's been a while since I've added a card to this set so I was looking for something to buy that would keep this collection moving.

This makes 361 signed cards from this set, out of 494 cards. I think there are only two cards left of living players: Willie Mays and Sandy Koufax. I've had the opportunity to send in a card for a Mays signing but haven't been willing to pay the $250+ he asks for. I'll keep my eyes open for a card already authenticated. I've seen his signature isn't looking too card lately either.

We're pretty well set for TwinsFest. Our binders are all organized and I've laid out the balls, bobbleheads and bats we plan to take. Anyone else going?

Bobby Knoop - 1972 Topps

One return today from Bobby Knoop who signed his 1972 Topps for me.

I received one shipment of Joel Zumaya cards so at least we each have one card to get signed by him at TwinsFest. Over the weekend I started organizing our binders of cards and pictures based on the stations my sons want to go to. We're mostly getting cards and a few pictures signed this year. There aren't too many players the boys want to sign baseballs, although my older son wants Josh Willingham on one, and I think I'll have Scott Erickson sign a Metrodome ball.

I do have a lot of bobbleheads to get signed though. On Friday night, my wife is going with my older son and based on the stations he wants to go to, she has four bobbleheads to tote around with her, as well as a bat.

Smoky Burgess - 1965 Topps

My TTM pipeline is drying up as I haven't sent out any since the first week of January and I've gotten most of those back. I've been overpaying for a few common cards for TwinsFest. Overpaying for shipping on those cards anyway. I had to buy some Joel Zumaya cards as he was added recently after the Twins signed him. Hopefully they arrive in time. I hedged my bet a bit by buying cards from a few different sellers on SportLots.com, hoping at least one would come through for me.

I recently bought another card to add to my 1965 Topps collection. I found a PSA/DNA authenticated Smoky Burgess for just about the cost of getting one authenticated.

Dave Marshall Return

One return today. My number of outstanding requests is down to about 4 or 5 that I can reasonably expect to get back. I probably won't send any more cards out until after TwinsFest.

Dave Marshall signed his 1971, 1972 and 1973 Topps nicely in blue sharpie. He also enclosed his business card I believe in response to my question about his career after his playing days.

Speaking of TwinsFest, I see the schedule has changed slightly. Brad Radke is replacing Jeff Reardon. I have a bobblehead for Radke, so I'll try to get that signed. In all, I hope to get nine different bobbleheads signed over the three days.

Rich Hebner TTM Return

Just one return today, and it was a little damaged. My return envelope was wrinkled and had some water damage. Of course, the one card I really wanted signed, the 1972 Topps, suffered the most damage. It's not a total loss though.

In addition to the 1972 Topps, Mr. Hebner signed a 1973, 1976 and 1978 Topps.

Game Used First Base From Fenway - Twins vs. Red Sox, May 20, 2010

I've seen a few game used bases at the Twins Pro Shops, but they were always too expensive to consider. Before Christmas, I got an email from Steiner Sports (like I do almost every day) advertising some game used items. They had a lot of bases so I looked for one from a Twins game.

I cam across this one: First base from a game on May 20th, 2010 in which the Red Sox beat the Twins 6-2. It was on sale for just under $100, which is less than half what I normally see them sold for.

During this game, Denard Span and Brendan Harris each had two hits, and Morneau and Cuddyer each had a hit. Mauer and Delmon Young each had an RBI. Morneau played first base for the Twins and Kevin Youkilis for the Red Sox. Youkilis was also 2-4, with 4 RBI, 3 of those coming from a home run off Liriano. Jon Lester was the winning pitcher.

I wasn't sure how I was going to display this, but I had a vacant spot in one of my display cases. Luckily it was at the bottom, as it's pretty heavy and would make the case very tippy if it were on top. I think it looks pretty good there.

It's dirty, which I hadn't really considered, and has the Red Sox logo on the sides. I don't think I'll add a lot of these to my collection, but maybe someday I'll buy a game used base from Target Field.

The TwinsFest schedules are out. It's very early this year. One change this year: the lines for Mauer and Morneau will be a lottery system. You go early and get a wristband. They'll hand out different color wristbands and 20 minutes before the signing, they announce which color wristband gets to get in line. You still aren't guaranteed an autograph, as the sessions are only a certain length of time, but they said they're trying to limit the wristband numbers to a reasonable amount.

I appreciate this effort, but I still see this causing some chaos. People will now line up way early for the wristband line in hopes of getting through more than once, then they'll still line up early for the autograph line anyway, just in case their color is called, so they are towards the front of the line to ensure they'll get their autograph.

I would recommend also numbering the wristbands within each color, and handing them out in a random order, so they first person in line has the same chance as the last, of getting their autographs. We aren't gong to mess with this on Friday evening, but maybe we'll give it a shot on Saturday and Sunday.

Clay Carroll and Joe Astroth Returns

I got a nice vintage card back in the mail today. Joe Astroth signed his 1953 Topps for me that I sent in early December.

I also added two more cards to my 1972 Topps set. Clay Carroll signed and personalized both his cards from the set.

TTM and Private Signing Returns - Jack Morris and Pete Rose

I came home to a nice full mailbox today.

First, I received a return from Roger Repoz, who signed his 1967, 1969, 1971 and 1972 Topps.

Bill Stoneman signed a 1969, 1971, 1972, and 1973 Topps for me.

I also received some cards from a couple of private signings via Tom Orr at Atommic Sports.

I sent in three cards for Pete Rose, including a 1965 Topps, a 1972 Topps and a 1972 Topps In Action.

I also sent in a couple cards for Jack Morris. He signed a 2000 Fleer Greats of the Game and a 2008 Upper Deck Masterpieces card. The Masterpieces card is a little dark, but still looks okay.

Lastly, I received a package of 8x10s I ordered for TwinsFest. I haven't sorted through them yet. I'll save that for tomorrow night.

Dave Hillman - 1961 Topps

I've been adding a few to this set lately and hope to get some more to send out, but probably won't buy any more until the next card show after TwinsFest. Kevin Tapani Bobblehead and Game Used Denard Span Batting Gloves

Today my older son and I attended the Twin Cities Sports Collectors Club show in Bloomington. We were there to find some more cards and photos to get signed at TwinsFest as well as to get a Kevin Tapani autograph. I had Mr. Tapani sign my 1991 Twins bobblehead. Johnny didn't have him sign anything since he'll be at TwinsFest too. I was glad to have him sign this bobblehead so I had one less to carry around at TwinsFest.

After the show, we drove up to Plymouth to see my nieces in their figure skating show. One the way back, we decided to hit the FanHQ store at the Ridgedale Mall. We've never been there before. We have seen them at TwinsFest and get their emails. They have frequent signings by local pro athletes but we've never made it to one. They had some pretty cool game used, signed items. We ended up buying a pair of Denard Span signed, game used batting gloves. My sons are going to split them. They included a picture of him signing them as well.

First Returns of 2012 - Leron Lee and Hal Brown - and 2011 Stats

Two returns today. First, I got back Leron Lee on a 1972 and 1973 Topps after 442 days! I sent this request to him back in October of 2010.

Also, Hal Brown signed his 1953 Topps. I have one more 1953 Topps out in the mail that I hope to get back soon.

Although stats can change as older returns come in, I ended up 2011 with an 86% success rate. I still have 27 requests out from 2011 that could come back.

I sent out 12 requests today and hope to send out another 10-15 this week.

Collecting Goals for 2012

I'm not going to send out 250 requests this year. I simply don't have that many items I want to send out, as the card sets I'm working on are getting to the point where there are fewer good signers left that I don't already have. I'll continue to work on the '87 Twins bobblehead set, as well as the '91 Twins bobblehead set I bought in 2011.

Get 3 more bobbleheads signed from the 1987 Twins set. I only need Don Baylor, Randy Bush, Mark Davidson, Greg Gagne and Les Straker to complete the living players. Gagne actually has two from the set since his first was sent out with him as left-handed, when he's actually right-handed. They later sent out a correct version. I'll get both signed.

Get 8 more bobbleheads signed from the 1991 Twins set. I have 4 signed so far. I might be able to get up to 5 signed at TwinsFest, so I'll shoot for 3 more beyond that.

Reach 400 signed 1972 Topps. I have 323 so far, so I'll need to add 77 more. It's getting pretty tough and a little expensive. There are some good signers in the set in the high numbers range that although they are common players, the cards cost $4-$10.

Additional sets - Add 5 more 1958 Topps (not including team cards), 15 more 1961 Topps and 10 more 1965 Topps. Many of these will be paid signings or purchased since I have most of these sets so far. I think the only living players from the 1958 set I don't have are Willie Mays and Sandy Koufax.

That's it for my goals, unless I come across a new project during the year.

Final Update on 2011 Collecting Goals

Overall, I think I did pretty well on the goals I set for 2011. I don't think I'll be quite as ambitious in terms of quantity in 2012, but that's my next post.

Final update:

Send out 250 requests through the mail - I sent out exactly 250 requests this year. That's my third-highest total since I started sending out requests in 2003. I had some great returns, including Jim Bunning, Whitey Ford, and although not in the Hall of Fame category, Nick Punto, who is tough to get through the mail.

Reach 300 signed 1972 Topps cards - I ended the year at 323 signed cards from this set. I had one fairly large purchase from Mickey's which probably made the difference, otherwise it would have been really close.

Add 5 more signed bobbleheads to my 1987 Twins bobblehead collection. I added 4: George Frazier, Dan Schatzeder, Keith Atherton and Jeff Reardon. I didn't quite reach this goal this year.

Finish the 10 possible John Wheeldon portraits (out of 12) - I got all I could except for Harmon Killebrew who passed away this year. I really like this set and really wish I had gotten Killebrew's signed. I doubt I'll ever find one of these signed by him.

Overall, this was a pretty good year. However, we lost a lot of great retired players. Duke Snider and Harmon Killebrew were two of the bigger names, but there were many more from that era that were great ttm signers such as Johnny Schmitz, Duane Pillette and Eddie Joost.

Next, I'll post my goals for 2012.

Tomorrow or Monday I'll post my final results against my 2011 goals, and set some new goals for 2012. I'm buying a few items on Ebay in preparation for TwinsFest. My sons and I need to finalize our plans so we can order whatever photos or cards we need. I have plenty of bats, mini helmets and baseballs, so I don't have a lot of expensive supplies to buy this year.

Conley, Erskine and Naragon

A few nice returns today. Gene Conley signed his 1956 and 1961 Topps for a $10 fee. He also wrote a nice note in response to my letter and included information about his book. Mr. Conley played in both for both MLB and the NBA.

Carl Erskine signed the 1958 Topps Dodgers team card. He also included a signed Diamond Signatures card and wrote a short note thanking me for my interest on my letter.

Finally, Hal Naragon signed the 1958 Topps Indians team card. While writing the letter to Mr. Naragon, I noticed that Roger Maris played with him on the Indians. I never knew Maris played for any team other than the Yankees. Mr. Naragon wrote a short response to my question regarding playing with Maris with very positive comments about him.

All three letters came with responses to my questions or short "thank yous" which is why writing to the retired players is so fun.

Alex Grammas Return

Alex Grammas signed his 1954 Topps and 1958 Reds team card.

The year is winding down. Next weekend I'll update my progress on my goals I set for this year, as well as set news goals for next year. I received about 35 cards I bought on Ebay to send out, including about ten 1961 Topps and seventeen 1972 Topps. I'll probably write letters for those next weekend and send them out during the first week of 2012.

I also need to get moving on ordering some more pictures and cards of players that will be at TwinsFest next month.

Del Crandall and Joe Hicks Returns

Two returns today. Del Crandall signed his 1953 Topps for his $5 fee.

Joe Hicks signed and personalized a 1961 Topps. He also wrote me a note about his career after his playing days.

I've started ordering some items to get signed at TwinsFest and received a few items today. I ordered a 1988 All Star program to have signed by Terry Steinbach, who was the MVP of that game.

I also received bobbleheads of Shannon Stewart and Jacque Jones for my boys to have signed. I plan on getting Jacque Jones on a bobblehead that I already have. I won a Shannon Stewart signed bobblehead, along with signed bobblehads of Joe Mauer, Paul Molitor and Al Newman several years ago. I had Stewart sign a Metrodome banner back in April at the Minneapolis Sports Collectible and Autograph Convention. I'm not sure what I'll have him sign, if anything.

Finally, I received a couple 2002 Twins Programs with Jacque Jones on the cover that me and my younger son plan to get signed.

Don Gullett Return

On return today. I received a 1972 and 1978 Topps signed by Don Gullett after about 10 months.

I noticed today that Shannon Stewart and Jacque Jones are listed to appear at TwinsFest. These are exactly the type of guys I've been wanting to see there. Other than Corey Koskie, there aren't a lot of players from the late '90s and early 2000s. I have a Jacque Jones bobblehead that I didn't think I'd ever get signed but now I'll have a chance.

Bob Watson and Bob Cerv Returns

I mailed out four more requests to hit my goal of 250 requests for the year. I bought about 30 more cards on Ebay a few days ago but I don't know if I'll send those out this year. I need to turn my attention to TwinsFest and make sure I have enough cards and pictures for that weekend. I also need to do a little research about all the names listed on the Twins site of players that will be there that I've never heard of. I'm assuming most of them are minor leaguers.

Today I got back a couple of nice returns. Bob Watson returned his 1972 Topps signed in black sharpie and also write a brief note and signed my letter. Watson is now a VP with Major League Baseball.

I also got back a 1953 Topps signed by Bob Cerv. I included $5 with my request. I don't think Cerv is exactly a household name, but he had quite an impressive career. His best season was 1958. That year he had a .305 batting average and hit 38 home runs with 104 RBI.

Dick Groat Return

Just one return today. My outstanding requests have been coming back pretty steadily and I don't have too many more I expect to get back. I plan on sending out 4 more requests on Monday to meet my goal of 250 for the year. I'm at a pretty respectable 82% return rate for the year.

Another Goal Met - 1970 John Wheeldon Super Valu Portraits

I had a goal for this year to complete all the living players in the 1970 Super Valu giveaway portraits by John Wheeldon. There are 12 in the set, and I just got back my 10th signed picture from Ron Perranoski. The two deceased players include Cesar Tovar and Harmon Killebrew.

I also got back a couple of cards today. Jim Perry signed his 1961 Topps All Star card.

And Jim Greengrass signed his 1953 Topps and also wrote me a nice note about his career after his playing days. In his note he thanked me for including him in my collection! How many of today's players would take that point of view? I'm guessing none.

A few days ago I received a 1951 Bowman signed by Johnny Vander Meer that I bought from a member on sportscollectors.net. He gave me a very nice deal. Thanks Kyle!

A while ago I also received a surprise in the mail. Another scn member, and local collector, sent me a 1972 Topps signed by Burt Hooton and Earl Stephenson as a Christmas present. How nice and unexpected! He looked at my wantlists posted on scn and sent this card along since I didn't have it yet. Thanks again Kevin!

And Hal R. Smith signed his 1961 Topps. Sending to Mr. Smith is tricky. There are two Hal Smiths that played in the 50's and 60's. Both were catchers. I've sent to both successfully but you have to make sure you're sending the right cards to the right players!

Catching Up - Two Days of Returns Including Jim Bunning

We were away for a couple of days but I came home to a few nice returns.

On Friday, I received a 1972 and 1973 Topps from Paul Casanova that I sent to him back in July.

Also on Friday, I got back three 1972 Topps from Bill Melton, including his regular card, his "Boyhood Photos" card, and his "In Action" card.

On Saturday I received a 1961 Topps signed by Frank Sullivan. I had enclosed $5 with my request.

I also received a 1958 Topps signed by Hall of Famer Jim Bunning. Since retiring from the Senate, Mr. Bunning has been a great signer ttm. I already have a '58 signed by Bunning that I sent out years ago, but it was signed in ballpoint. I noticed he was recently signing in sharpie, so I decided to send again in hopes og upgrading. This one looks nice. Finding a decent '58 Topps of Bunning is difficult as they all seem to be printed poorly and mis-cut.

Finally, Roy Sievers signed a 1953 Topps for me. Mr. Sievers has always been a great signer and thanks to his long career, has a lot of great cards spanning about 15 years.

The list of players who will be attending TwinsFest is now on the Twin's web site. The list of current players is kind of weak. Lot's of minor-leaguers and some guys I've never heard of. There are some good names for returned players though. The usual guys like Blyleven, Carew, Molitor, Morris, Oliva, Hrbek, Gladden, etc. I'm sure I can find plenty to have these guys sign. Some guys that I don't normally see there are also listed, including Kaat, Reardon, and Scott Erickson. It looks like there will be seven players there from my 1991 bobblehead set so I'll make some good progress on getting those signed.

Today I received some nice returns. Ned Garver signed a 1955 Sport Magazine, and also included a few other signed items including a postcard promoting his book, a 1991 Topps Archives (pictured) and a page with a drawing and some highlights of his career.

Alan Foster signed his 1971 and 1972 Topps for me.

Gaylord Perry signed his 1972 Topps (for his $15 fee).

And Gary Waslewski signed his 1972 Topps for $5. He wrote a nice note answering my question regarding his career after his playing days and what he does with the fee he charges.

I'm going to start gearing up for TwinsFest and get all my cards together. Time to clear out the Nathan and Young cards. We'll see about Cuddyer and Kubel. And I'll need to find some Jamey Carroll and Ryan Doumit cards.

May 12th, 1967 - Kansas City A's 2, Minnesota Twins 1

We went to the TCSCC card show today in Bloomington. I had pretty good luck. I bought a little over 20 vintage cards to send out including six 1956 Topps and ten 1953 Topps. I forgot my list of 1972 cards I need so I didn't get any more of those.

At the auction, I bought a 1967 Twins Program that has 13 signatures. The original owner must have had seats by the visitors dugout because all but one of the signatures is from the A's players. These include Roger Repoz, Bert Campaneris, Jack Aker, John Odom, Joe Nossek, Phil Roof, Ted Kubiak, Chuck Dobson, Mike Hershberger, Ramon Webster, Jim Nash and Sal Bando. Sam Mele, manager of the Twins, also signed it.

For under $20, it seemed like a good deal. Most of the guys that signed it are good signers ttm, with the exception of Chuck Dobson and Ramon Webster. Even Sam Mele, at 89 years old, is still a good signer.

Rick Wise and Al Rosen

Next, Al Rosen signed a nice copy of a 1954 Sport Magazine and added his MVP inscription. I had enclosed $10 with my request but he returned it.

My kids and I will be attending the TCSCC card show and auction tomorrow in Bloomington. I hope to buy some vintage cards of players I don't yet have autographs of. I received a couple of returns today. First, I was excited to get my 1954 Topps back from Bill "Moose" Skowron. Moose was a six-time All Star and won five World Series (four with the Yankees, and one with Dodgers). I included $10 with my request.

I also got back three cards from Lloyd Allen, who signed a 1971, 1972 and 1973 Topps. I sent these back in January, so I was happy to see them again.

1991 Twins Bobbleheads - Aguilera and Leach

Today I received back to two signed bobbleheads from the 1991 Twins bobblehead set. A sportscollectorsnet.com member took some items to a 1986 Mets reunion signing and was able to get my bobbleheads signed by Rick Aguilera and Terry Leach.

I was happy to get Leach since I missed him when he was signing in Minnesota because I hadn't received my bobblehead set yet.

I sent the Scott Erickson bobblehead off to the same SCN contact to get signed. as well as the David West bobblehead to a different mail-in signing. I'm off to a quick start on this set. I hope to get many done at TwinsFest this year.

George Mitterwald Return

The first of my latest bunch of ttm request was returned today. George Mitterwald helped me further a couple of my 2011 collecting goals by signing his 1970 Super Valu giveaway portrait by John Wheeldon.

He also signed both of his 1972 Topps for me. I had purchased the "In Action" card from Mickey's earlier this year so I'm just adding one more to my total, which is now 290, just 10 short of my goal of 300.

Johnny Antonelli Autographs

A generous SCN member offered to take items to a Johnny Antonelli signing that occurred last weekend. I sent a 1959 Baseball Digest and a 1960 Topps.

I received both back today and they look great. I even received a photo of Mr. Antonelli signing my magazine!

The magazine also has Jim Landis and Camilo Pascual on the cover. I'll try to get them to sign if I find a mail-in signing. I don't think I'll risk sending it to them directly.

Twins Bobbleheads Ebay Purchase

Today I received a few bobbleheads I bought on Ebay. These aren't rare, or signed, but some that I don't have in my collection yet.

There's probably no way I'll get the Eddie Guardado one signed, but maybe Brad Radke will be at another TwinsFest so I can get his signed.

I'll probably be able to get the Tom Kelly bobblehead signed, right after I get his signed form the 1991 World Series set. I also bought a Billy Martin.

I'll also be able to get Gardenhire to sign his at TwinsFest, but I doubt I'll ever see A.J. Pierzynski again so his will probably go unsigned.

My rough calculation brings my Twins bobblehead collection set up to about 85. Yikes, where am I going to put all these?

3rd Quarter Update on 2011 Collecting Goals

Since the update on my collecting goals is over 3 weeks late, you can guess how I'm doing on my actual goals. My sons and I have been golfing 1-3 times a week, usually on the evenings I would normally be sending out requests. With the days getting shorter and temperatures dropping here in Minnesota, our golfing days are nearly over so my requests should pick up.

Anyway, so much for excuses. Here's my update:

Send out 250 requests through the mail - As of today I have sent out 178 requests this year. Hitting 250 is looking to be a challenging goal, especially since I don't have too many cards to send out.
Reach 300 signed 1972 Topps cards - I'm at 289 right now. 300 signed cards by the end of the year is very achievable.
Add 5 more signed bobbleheads to my 1987 Twins bobblehead collection. So far I've added 4: George Frazier, Dan Schatzeder, Keith Atherton and Jeff Reardon. I still need to add one more by the end of the year and will need to make it a priority to keep my eyes out for an opportunity. I have recently sent out three bobbleheads from the 1991 set I recently received, but I guess that doesn't count.
Finish the 10 possible John Wheeldon portraits (out of 12) - I got Rich Reese back a while ago. I need George Mitterwald and Ron Perranoski. Unfortunately, Harmon Killebrew passed away. I sent out the George Mitterwald portrait today along with a couple of 1972 Topps. I'll send out the Perranoski on Monday.

If I get some cards and spend about 4 evenings writing some letters, I should hit my 1972 Topps set and overall ttm requests goals. The tough one will be getting that last 1987 Twins bobblehead signed.

A Couple of Eddie Mathews Purchases

I added another Ron Lewis Living Legends autographed portrait to my collection this week. I purchased a PSA/DNA-authenticated Eddie Mathews on Ebay. It's also signed by the artist. I'm slowly adding a bunch of these to my collection. I have nine of the twenty now. I'm still missing some big names like Koufax, Mays and Drysdale.

Coincidentally, I also bought an Eddie Mathews signed 8x10 from a fellow sportscollectors.net member.

I'm hoping to have some time this weekend to send out at least 10 through the mail requests. We'll see if I actually get around to it.

Al Kaline and a Few Purchases

My son got back a great return today. I gave him a 1958 Topps Al Kaline and $10 for his birthday to send the card off to get signed. He got it back today. I think this is one of the nicest vintage cards to get signed, and Kaline always signs nicely.

I bought a lot of 5 signed cards, mainly to get the 1934 Goudey reprint signed by Ben Chapman.

The lot also included a 1951 Bowman reprint and 1991 Topps archives signed by Hank Bauer.

A 1990 Swell signed by Bobby Doerr.

And a 1988 Pacific signed by George Kell.

Bennie Daniels TTM Return

Today I received a nice return from a very reliable TTM signer. Bennie Daniels signed a 1959, 1961 and 1962 Topps for my collection.

I sent off the 1991 Twins bobbleheads of Rick Aguilera and Terry Leach on Saturday. They should come back the last week in October.

I have very few cards to send out. I need to make my way to a show and buy a bunch more to send out.

1991 Twins Bobblehead Set Has Arrived!

Finally, I received my 1991 Twins bobblehead set, which I ordered back in August. This set came in two separate boxes.

These bobbleheads feel much lighter than most other bobbleheads. Maybe there's more plastic in them? A different type of material? The paint job is as sloppy as ever, but the likenesses of the players are better than most. This set also has a wider variety of poses, which is nice. Some of the pitchers are on a brown base, rather than the typical green.

Surprisingly, I only had a couple with any type of damage. The small plaque on the Jack Morris figure was glue face-down, and prying it up left some of the white of the plaque stuck to the base. I'm not sure if I'll try to get a replacement or not. One of the heads also came off one of the bobbleheads as I was putting it away. This is pretty common. I'll just glue it back on. The same thing had happened to my Sal Butera bobblehead from the 1987 set. When I sent it in to a signing, I just mailed the head rather than the whole body, and glued it back on after I got it back.

There is a 1986 Mets reunion coming up in a couple of weeks. I am trying to arrange a deal with an SCN contact to take my Terry Leach and Rick Aguilera bobbleheads to get signed. I'm hoping I can get 4 or 5 of them signed at TwinsFest next January as well. Tom Kelly, Kent Hrbek, Kevin Tapani and Al Newman should be pretty easy.

Ken Henderson Through the Mail Return

I received a nice return from Ken Henderson today. In addition to a Topps cards from 1971, 1973 and 1978, he signed a 1965 Topps already signed by Jack Hiatt.

Since September is over, I need to review my goals for the year. I didn't make much progress since the end of July I'm afraid. I'll update my progress against my goals later this week.

Pedro Gonzalez Return After 1005 Days!

I received a couple of long returns today.

First, Art Ditmar signed and returned a 1960 Topps that I sent last May.

And Pedro Gonzalez signed and returned my 1965 Topps after 1005 days! I sent it on 1/2/2009. I had enclosed $10 with my request. I have since purchased this card signed but am really happy to get this one back.

1965 Twins World Series Tickets

Today I received a couple of Ebay purchases: Twins tickets to the 1965 World Series, games 1 and 2.

I don't know much about collecting vintage tickets, but these will go well in my 1965 Twins display case with the banners, bobblehead, signed balls and pictures.

They're punched with "Void" on them. Apparently they are "proofs". I'm assuming that means they were test prints before they printed the real ones. I've seen the actual tickets go for a couple hundred dollars. I didn't pay anywhere near that much, I'm sure because these aren't "real" tickets.

My Last Joe Nathan Autograph?

We had great seats to the Twins game last night. Dangerous, but nice. The line drives come pretty quick right above the dugout!

My older son got a ball tossed to him by Trevor Plouffe after the first inning as he was heading back into the dugout. Thanks Trevor! Plouffe ended up being the hero of the game, knocking in the winning run. I think my son will get Plouffe to sign that ball at TwinsFest next year.

Before the game, Joe Nathan was signing autographs by the dugout. We weren't prepared for autographs so we had nothing to have him sign. However, I did get a 2011 Topps Heritage in the mail from Joe yesterday as well. The Twins have an option for Nathan next year but it's not a guarantee that they'll exercise it. I may have gotten my last Joe Nathan autograph.

June 16, 1967 - Cleveland 2, Twins 1 in 10 Innings

I'm waiting on a few ttm returns from some Twins before the season ends. I sent to Capps, Nathan and Pavano back on the 12th of September, hoping these decent ttm signers would send a few back before the season ends. So far, nothing.

A few weeks ago I visited The Ballpark in Apple Valley and bought a few vintage scorecards. One of those included this score card from the Cleveland Indians versus the Twins.

The date was June 16th, 1967. It was my Mom's birthday. She was about 8 months pregnant with me. The Monterey Pop Festival opened in California and the Twins lost to the Indians 2-1 in 10 innings.

The Twins only run came on a Rod Carew home run in the 6th inning. Killebrew was 0-3 with a walk and two strikeouts. Jim Merritt pitched nine good innings for the Twins, striking out six and walking two, giving up just one run. Al Worthington came in for the 10th and struck out one, but gave up three hits to lose the game.

Luis Tiant, then with the Indians, pitched all 10 innings for the Tribe, striking out nine and walking one. He gave up eight hits but just one run. No wonder the Twins acquired him for the 1970 season.

Vern Law and More Paid Signing Returns

A full mailbox today for once. First, I got a great return from Vern Law, who signed a 1961 Sports All Stars magazine. He also added a couple of inscriptions which I didn't even request. How nice! I included $10 with my request.

I got back three more cards from Chris Potter signings.

Richie (Dick) Allen signed a 1965 Topps.

Denny McLain signed a 1972 Topps.

And Ralph Kiner signed a 1949 Bowman.

I haven't received my 1991 Twins bobblehead set yet so I called the Twins. They said I should get it the first week in October. Bummer. Terry Leach is signing this weekend in Roseville and I was hoping to get him to sign his. He hasn't done a signing here before so who knows when I'll see him again.

Willie Kirkland Return From Paid Signing

Today I added a couple of very tough cards to my 1958 and 1965 Topps sets. Chris Potter Sports had a signing with Willie Kirkland. I have been watching for an opportunity to get these cards signed for several years so I'm very happy to finally get these done.

I haven't made much progress on either of these sets this year. I'll have to take another look at my sets and see if there are more I can go after.

Returns Starting to Come Back

I sent out a few requests last week and now they're coming back.

Yesterday I received a 1952 Sport Magazine signed by Al Dark. I included $10 with my request.

Yesterday I also received a couple of 1972 Topps rookie cards. Bob Reynolds signed his card, already signed by Jerry Bell (the card has the pictures of Bell and Porter switched, so he signed his picture).

And Tom Ragland signed a 1972 Topps already signed by Bill Fahey.

Today I received a 1958 Topps signed by Charles "Whammy" Douglas. I already have this card signed by him, but he had been a very tough signer for years and I had an extra card laying around so I sent it out. I included $5 with my request.
